Ebrington & District Gardening Club are going to Kenilworth Castle

Tuesday 9th June 2009 - Meet at Ebrington Village Hall at 12.15pm

The first visit of the Club's new 2009/2010 Programme is an afternoon visit to Kenilworth Castle.
Newly opened in May, one of the greatest gardens of the Elizabethan Age has been re-created at Kenilworth Castle to look as it did in 1575 when Robert Dudley , Earl of Leicester welcomed Queen Elizabeth 1 to his Warwickshire seat. At a cost of well over £2 million, English Heritage claim that the garden design and planting has been carefully researched to ensure that the garden is as authentic as possible, though a recent TV programme takes issue with certain aspects of their interpretation of historical records.

As well as the historic varieties of plants, trees and flowers the structures in this garden include a centre piece Italianate fountain, a sumptuous aviary, two majestic arbours, statues and four 15ft tall obelisks.

A nineteen day festival was held in the grounds to woo Elizabeth but to no avail. She said no to Dudley's offer of marriage and her decision led to the coming of the Stuarts 28 years later.
