Atlantic rowing team to take part in the Moreton Show

A local novice adventurer, preparing to row across the Atlantic Ocean, is offering visitors to the Moreton Show the opportunity to win their name on his boat.

Nick Jackson, 32, and his rowing partner are taking part in the Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race, which will see them row 3,000 miles from the Spanish island of La Gomera to Antigua in the Caribbean from December.

Visitors to the show can take part in a 1-minute rowing challenge.  There’s an event for men, women and under-14s, with the winner of each category getting their name onto the boat that will be his home for up to 80 days.  Nick will be on hand all day to explain to visitors the route he’ll take, the likely weather conditions he’ll face and life onboard.  As well as how he’ll cope with rowing two-hour shifts, 24 hours a day, and burning daily up to 8,000 calories.

Nick, who grew up in Sutton-Under-Brailes, says “I used to go to the Moreton Show when I was a kid and loved every minute of it as there was always so much to do and see. So to now be taking part is a great honour.  The row-a-thons are a great way of getting the public involved and children love climbing onto the boat and learning about what my life at sea will be like.”

The race will see Nick competing against more than 30 other teams from around the world.  On route he’ll battle through severe storms and 40 foot waves and face the ever-present twin dangers of shark attacks and capsizing.

To date, only 300 people have successfully rowed the Atlantic.  More than 10 times that amount have climbed Mount Everest.  Nick hopes the journey will take 60 days but he plans to take enough army ration-style food to last 80.

For Nick, completing the journey is a long-held ambition.  He says: “Rowing the Atlantic is something I’ve wanted to do since I was 15, when I read the true account of the first men to succeed in the challenge in 1966.”
