Better known as editor of the Daily Mirror for ten years in the 1980s,Mike Molloy is now a successful painter.  An exhibition of his latest work, ‘Post Generation Nostalgia’ is taking place at The Dollar Street Gallery, Cirencester, Gloucestershire from 4th to 29th May 2010 where his journalist friend of many years John Penrose has opened a gallery.

Collectors of his work include Alastair Campbell who bought one of Molloy’s paintings for his wife’s birthday last year.  However, since then Molloy has announced he is not going to vote Labour in this election but will be voting Conservative….he wonders whether Alastair Campbell will have turned the picture round in disgust…….

The Leaving of London: Mike MolloyThe Leaving of London: Mike Molloy‘The Leaving of London’, oil on canvas, 72 x 60 inches by Mike Molloy.
His paintings are quintessentially English and are mostly drawn from the suburbs of London.  Brought up in Ealing (and still living there today) he was very influenced by the black and white movies made by Ealing Studio and by his family’s photograph albums of the 1930s and 1940s.  It is a world that has all but gone from our cities and suburbs today.

Mike Molloy studied painting at Ealing School of Art before beginning a career in newspapers.  He was editor of the Daily Mirror for the 10 years before Robert Maxwell bought the company when he became Editor in Chief of Mirror Group Newspapers.  He left to become a full-time writer and published several novels and children’s books until about 15 years ago when he began to paint again.

There will be around 40 paintings in the exhibition with prices ranging between £2,000 and £5,000.
