Walking in the Cotswolds for St Basils

700 intrepid walkers, 28 mile long trek, 16,000 miles covered in searing heat across the Cotswolds, raising £90,000 for homelessness charity St Basils.

With temperatures soaring to over 24 degrees centigrade, 149 teams totalling around 700 intrepid walkers, mainly from the business community, trekked either 14 or 28 miles on bone dry terrain across Chipping Camden last week.
Sponsors of the event can be well pleased that their support was appreciated. As well as being the major sponsor of St Basils Walk, Cadbury, the main sponsor of the event donating £4,000, also provided an extra energy boost with 2,500 bars of chocolate, all consumed: Barclays Wealth funded the publication of the walk guide so people could find their way; Pret A Manger donated 1,000 bottles of water for the thirsty walkers and dogs; and Baverstock School loaned us their minibus for the whole weekend.

The total mileage covered is estimated at 16,000 and although everyone returned safely there were quite a few stories to tell.
One of our team’s walkers found a dog running around obviously lost. They took the dog along with them watering him along the way and handed the dog over at the next St Basils checkpoint. At the end of the event the dog was taken back to the base in the school in Chipping Camden where the young dog was re-united with his delighted owner. The owner had been franticly searching for him all over the Cotswolds. He was so grateful that the dog was safe that he donated a cheque to St Basils for £50.00.
Steve Rainbow, event organiser said:
“As ever, the safety of the walkers is paramount at this our largest fundraising event. Without the sponsors support our costs would be so much higher. However we hope the walk event will raise around £90,000 this year which will go directly towards funding of the crucial work of preventing youth homelessness. The  most important people on the day were the individuals who commit themselves to such an arduous journey and keep on coming back for more. Special commendations to the team who took the time out to care for others. We will immediately begin preparations for next year’s event which will take place at Cader Idris in Wales on 20th June 2011. We look forward to seeing them all again then.”
Matthew Beale a team walker from Deloitte LLP. Also sent his best wishes, “May I take this opportunity to say that my team felt that the organisation of the walk was absolutely excellent. The St Basils staff were extremely friendly and helpful, with the checkpoints being amply supplied with food and water. This made the somewhat painful process of walking 28 miles in the heat slightly less traumatic. It really was a lovely day and, l hope, a profitable one for the charity.”
St Basils needs to raise over £.5m (half a million pounds) each year to ensure that we are able to continue to provide support services to prevent youth homelessness across the midlands.
