The University of Gloucestershire has confirmed that Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr Paul Hartley will take over as Chief Executive and Vice-Chancellor on 1 August upon the retirement of Professor Patricia Broadfoot. Dr Hartley has been in the role of Acting Chief Executive since the end of March.

Paul said: “I am delighted to have this opportunity to lead the University as we focus on the future and build further upon our excellent reputation for teaching and learning.

“The immediate task is to continue the disciplined approach to controlling costs, increasing income and ensuring students’ needs are met. Our track record in all these aspects is improving with rising league table positions and excellent feedback from students.”

He came to the University of Gloucestershire from Coventry University where he was Dean of School and Assistant Pro Vice-Chancellor.  He is a Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Auditor and has had experience of both UK and overseas audit.

In his role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Paul has held responsibility for academic development and has led the University to a successful QAA Audit outcome and has introduced policies which led to major growth in international activity.

Educated at Sheffield City Grammar School and then at Leeds University, Paul holds a first-class degree in Modern Languages, and degrees of Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy. He is the author of books and articles in the areas of applied language and German literature.
