20th Anniversary of the Guild of Handicraft Trust in Chipping Campden

It has been 20 years since a group of enthusiasts established the Guild of Handicraft Trust. At that time the only thing they all had in common was a passion and interest in the work of Charles Robert Ashbee and his Guildsmen.
It took them over 17 years to create a permanent home and realise their ambitions. 17 years to create a place that would tell the story of the arrival of Ashbee and his Guild of Handicraft to Chipping Campden, that would collect and care for the work of designers and makers working in the north Cotswolds, a place that would support a changing exhibitions programme and would offer educational facilities.
Those 20 years have been filled with huge joy at being donated collections of work by Alec Miller and C.R.Ashbee, at the dedication and enthusiasm of people for the project, offering their support, their time and their money. But it is also a time that had periods of lows; the original Museum closing down due to financial constraints and the search for another location, the constant struggle to keep the Trust going and keeping people enthused about their work.
This exhibition looks at a group of people, and in particular that of the four people who made up the original Executive Committee, who wanted to celebrate these talented designers and craftspeople who chose Campden and the north Cotswolds as their home.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 16th October – Sun 28 November 2010.

Court Barn Museum is an independent museum and the brainchild of a group of local enthusiasts called the Guild of Handicraft Trust. The museum was created through the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and monies raised by the Guild of Handicraft Trust.
This groundbreaking museum, situated in the Cotswold town of Chipping Campden, tells the story of how a small town, in a beautiful setting, became a gathering place for creative people at the start of the 20th Century and continues to attract designers and makers today. Highlights include work by C.R.Ashbee, F.L Griggs and Katharine Adams.
