University Blackout Highlights Sustainability Issues

Friday 2nd March, Blackout and Sustainability Fayre, University of Gloucestershire, Oxstalls Campus, Oxstalls Lane, Gloucester, GL2 9HW.

Students and staff at the University of Gloucestershire will be shedding light on sustainability issues with this year's Blackout event on Friday (2 March).

Organised by Events Management students, the event will be inviting everyone on the Oxstalls campus to power down for an hour at 6.30pm following a Sustainability Fayre in the Link Corridor from 11am until 3pm.

As well as showcasing local businesses and organizations who advocate sustainable lifestyles, the Fayre will be giving people the chance to learn more about consumption by operating portable music devices through pedal power.

The Learning Centre, teaching rooms, halls of residence, offices and Students' Union (SU) bar will all be pulling the plug from 6.30pm to 7.30pm in a bid to raise awareness of sustainability issues and consumption.

And pedal powered music will be providing some of the entertainment from 6pm until 8pm at the Oxstalls Students' Union bar.

Events Management students are hosting the activities, and organiser Kimberley Higginbottom said: "It provides an opportunity for actively engaging in raising awareness and understanding of sustainable issues and our consumption activities. We're aiming to deliver an experience to the university community that encourages people to get involved and consider the impact of their actions. We aspire to inform others of the consequences of our lifestyles and how we can live incorporating sustainability into our everyday lives."

Entry is free to the evening event, which includes a barbecue, special edition Blackout cocktails, a Sustainability Top Tips quiz, and unplugged acoustic entertainment from performers including singer songwriter Ellie Dussek.

Summary of events as follows:

• Blackout and Sustainability Fayre, Oxstalls Link Corridor, 11am-3pm.
• The Blackout event, Oxstalls Students' Union Bar, 6pm until 8pm. Free entry, barbecue, live music and quiz.
