Cheltenham Chilli Company Turning up Heat on Campus

Students at the University of Gloucestershire are spicing up campus life with their new business venture, the Cheltenham Chilli Company.

Aiming to raise the profile of local produce to students and staff, the social enterprise will raise chilli pepper plants on site before selling them and chilli based products such as conserves and chutneys.

The project is part of an NUS Green Impact Excellence Award project and the plants will be grown at a large greenhouse on the Park campus in Cheltenham. Students will develop the secluded spot, improving biodiversity in the area by building a pond, growing wild flowers and creating space for beehives.

Tom Newman, Volunteering, Jobshop and Opportunities Manager at the University of Gloucestershire's Students' Union, said: "This is a really exciting project and an opportunity for students across the University to get involved, whether or not they have green fingers. The Student Enterprise Network are hard at work getting things off the ground and have organised a branding competition for staff and students to design a concept. The project builds on our past achievements in the area of sustainability and we are looking forward to presenting this year's Freshers with the fruits of our labours with a long term ambition of selling the products commercially at local farmers' markets and beyond."

Planting will start in March at the greenhouse in good time for the start of the new academic year and it is hoped that several hundred plants will be ready for September.
