Counting up to 500 Marathons- Number 451 is completed on target

Cotswolds based Steve Edwards completed Marathon number 451 on Sunday April 6th.
Steve only had to go to Taunton, Somerset this time, to complete marathon number 451 in his bid for a world record of running 500 marathons by 2012 in an average time of under 3 hours 20 minutes. Only 49 more races to go!
The Flora London Marathon is next on the list.

Marathon number 451 was organised by Taunton & District Carnival Committee Ltd, Associate Members of UK Athletics and was a two lap course starting and finishing at the Somerset College of Arts and Technology in Taunton.
Steve, again running for the 100 Marathon Club and wearing Number 87, completed this Marathon in 3 hours, 12 minutes, 15 seconds for 25th place in a field of 140 men and 32 women and took 3rd place in his male veteran over 45 class. So he was again well within his world record challenge average target time of 3 hours 20 minutes.

After previous long haul trips to run Marathons in Cornwall and Dumfries, to travel to Taunton was a doddle but, as Steve says, the weather played its part - "I woke up to four inches of snow in the Cotswolds on Sunday and wondered whether the race was on, but after a quick call to the organiser to confirm, I was on the road for a 210 mile round trip to Taunton for marathon number 451. This was the usual two lap course with two good climbs on each lap, so I was pleased to run 13 minutes quicker than last year. I was also pleased to run equal splits of 1 hour 36 minutes for each lap and still feel good at the end. We were also lucky with the weather as it was quite sunny and pleasant for the majority of the race, just a few parts where you ran into that biting cold wind. Then just as we were leaving Taunton a snow blizzard started so what good timing that was."

Steve then gave us an update on his training for his world record challange 10 marathons in 10 days in May. " I can't beleive what a difference a year makes. This time last year I had a horrible niggling hamstring injury and my times had drifted lower."
"This year I feel good, my times so far have been a lot more consitent and my averages are coming down as each race passes. I hope and pray this continues. I think that upping my training has helped as I'm now running around 80 miles a week in preparation for this year's 10 marathons in 10 days challenge in May where I will attempt to break the combined time world record that was set last year. I have also now joined Bourton Roadrunners where the weekly training runs are a lot more competitive and therefore more beneficial for increasing speed and fitness."

"So onto the big marathon next Sunday in London, The Flora London Marathon Sunday 13th April. Can I just say good luck to everyone running it, remember, if it is your first time, don't go off too fast, start off steady and save yourself for the final 6 miles. Remember the golden rule, halfway in a marathon is not 13 miles, its 20 miles. "
And that is good advice from a man who knows as he has run 451 Marathons in total, including a world record 87 marathons in a one year period.

Bourton Roadrunners are based at Bourton-on-the-Water, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and were founded in 1981. They are a small friendly club in the Cotswolds that welcomes all runners whatever their abilities. Whether you are training for a marathon, the local village fun-run, or you run just to keep fit, you will be made welcome.
Club members compete in road races throughout the year and cross-country events during the winter months.
They are affiliated to the Gloucestershire AAA, Midland Counties Athletics Association and UK Athletics.
