IN takes place at New Brewery Arts, Brewery Court, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, GL7 1JH
OUT takes place in the grounds and riverside gardens of Quenington Old Rectory, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, GL7 5BN
IN and OUT is an unrivalled collection of contemporary glass sculpture featuring an eclectic mix of new and established glass artists who make work for the interior and the garden.
The exhibition has a split location that will encourage people to travel between the pretty Cotswold village of Quenington and its beautiful Old Rectory and nine miles away to the New Brewery Arts in Cirencester with its café shop and its resident glass designer makers and the other attractions of this busy and varied market town.
IN and OUT is a selling exhibition with over 60 pieces of work ranging from domestic ware to large architectural installations. Prices will be from £30 to several thousand pounds. IN and OUT is co-curated by Lucy Abel Smith and Miranda Leonard.
Art historian, lecturer and curator, Lucy Abel Smith has been a pioneer in exhibiting radical works in glass in the open air as part of the biennial sculpture exhibition ‘fresh air’. She has established a reputation for showing new and established glass artists from eastern Europe and commissioning established and young glass artists through the Quenington Sculpture Trust. Miranda Leonard of New BreweryArts has been curating contemporary craft exhibitions for over 20 years. New Brewery Arts has recently had a £2.8 million refurbishment with major grants from the Arts Council of England and Cotswold District Council.
Glass is a contemporary art form with a huge following in theUSA, Scandinavia and Asia but presently there are few collectors of art glass in the UK and the opportunity to see the full range of established and emerging artists is rare. Hence this unique exhibition highlights the huge range and diversity of work, both abstract and figurative, being produced by highly collectable, international glass artists from New Zealand and Europe to British artists such as Colin Reid and Sally Fawkes.
IN : This part of the exhibition will feature around 40 glass artists highlighting the use of glass within settings which recreate interiors and although some installation work and sculptural glass will be shown, the exhibition will concentrate on domestic sized works for ornament and use. There will also be a section on jewellery. Artists exhibiting in this section include Sally Fawkes who sculpts in glass from her studio in Stroud; Richard Jackson, who works alongside his wife, Sally Fawkes, creating cast glass sculptures; Anthony Scala working mainly in clear and black glass, makes objects that can be held in the hand and looked at closely; Bruno Romanelli, who is considered to be one of the most talented young glass artists working in Europe - his work recently has taken a new turn away from figure inspired work to refined abstract form; and Angela Thwaites who works in cast and engraved glass.
OUT: Glass is one of the most exciting materials to show outside as the ever-changing environment impacts upon the sculpture and the mood of the piece changes with each season. There will be around 35 artists in this section including Colin Reid who is one of the most influential glass makers in the country, best known for his beautiful cast forms; LoCo Glass, from the New Brewery Art and a Gloucestershire success story, work in hot and cold glass; Neil Wilkin, one of the most established names in glass, creates forms of great technical skill echoing nature; Wendy Ramshaw, best-known for her jewelleryand metal work, has now turned her attention to glass; Max Jacquard who won the last Glass Biennale in Sunderland and has work in the V&A Museum; Richard Wheater is one of the few artists working totally in neon, his forms are delicate, subtle and amusing and finally, Emma Woffenden, who is one of the foremost practitioners of art glass installations working in Europe and USA.
