Views from the Folio - The Watercolours of William Bowyer, RA

Sunday 26th October 2008 - Saturday 11th November ; Fosse Gallery Fine Art, Stow-on-the-Wold
This is the first Solo Exhibition at the Fosse Gallery for William Bowyer, RA. He has been associated with the Gallery for many years, most recently by contributing to the RA Exhibition here in September 2007.

William Bowyer RA. From Kew BridgeWilliam Bowyer was born in Leek, Staffordshire and trained at the Royal College of Art where his tutors included Carel Weight and Ruskin Spear. He works in the great tradition of English figurative painting and is renowned for his strong portraiture and his powerful and evocative paintings, especially of The Thames near his home in Chiswick and of the Suffolk Coast.
In 1988 the National Portait Gallery acquired his portraits of Arthur Scargill and of the cricketer Vivian Richards. Cricket is one of his great loves and in that same year the MCC commissioned him to paint the bi-centenary game at Lords.

Bill was elected a Royal Academician in 1981 and is a member of the Royal Portrait Society, the Royal Watercolour Society and a Past President of the New English Art Club.

This Exhibition at the Fosse Gallery includes four decades of watercolours personal to the artist, never seen before. Carefully taken from the Folio one by one they exude the same freshness as when they were first painted. Whether he reflects upon buildings, trees, water or sky along his own stretch of the Thames or out in the elements wherever they may be, he communicates with us directly; "an Englishman's eye in broad, knowing strokes of colour".

For years, his paintings, exhibited at the RA Summer Exhibition, have given the viewing public immense pleasure. It is indeed a privilege to be staging the Exhibition for such an accomplished and respected artist.
