Council gives grants to community projects

Four projects across the Cotswolds have been given a helping hand this month thanks to a total grant of £44,500 from Cotswold District Council.

The Council’s Community Projects Fund – used to improve and enhance community facilities for all ages – has supported £15,000 grants for projects in Down Ampney and Stow-on-the-Wold, while plans to improve the village halls in Chedworth and Coates have also benefited with sums of £7,500 and £7,000 respectively.

Down Ampney Village Hall was originally given a £15,000 grant by the Council in 2006 but the planned improvements were delayed  after the hall was destroyed by an arson attack in August 2007.

However, Cotswold District Council agreed to keep their grant open and the money will be used to continue with the planned improvements, which include a new entrance hall, toilets and storage areas.

In Stow-on-the-Wold, the grant of £15,000 will be put towards play facilities, with plans in place to renovate two existing play parks in the town, as well as building a new toddlers play area and an ‘outside gymnasium’ for older youths.

Also, Chedworth will be able to start improvements on the village hall toilets after it received a grant of £7,500 from the fund.  The money will be used to improve disabled access, as well as making them easier to clean and more water efficient.

The village of Coates will also be able to enhance the toilets at their village hall after being given a £7,000 grant, which will be used as part of the first phase of a refurbishment programme.

Cotswold District Council Leader Cllr Lynden Stowe said:  “This Fund plays a big role in helping towns and villages to launch projects to ensure their communities have access to better facilities.
“We are particularly keen to provide or improve play facilities in the District, as well as offering help to enhance venues such as village halls and community centres.”

Grants are awarded from £1,000 up to a maximum of £15,000, without exceeding 35% of the total cost of the project.

Projects applying for the Community Projects Fund need to fit into one of two categories – either enhancement of community facilities or recreation and play facilities
