Blockley Ladies Choir strike the right note

(From the Chipping Campden Bulletin. included with kind permission of Jeremy Green)

Blockley ladies choir brought back some impressive silverware from the recent mid-Somerset music festival at Bath Guildhall, where they won two of the four classes they entered. Their success was especially pleasing as they are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year and will be performing favourite pieces from their repertoire at a special anniversary concert in St. Georges Hall, Blockley, on Saturday,4th August.

The choir, originally formed to take part in WI activities, has welcomed scores of local women over the years who have enjoyed singing a wide variety of choral music, led from the beginning by Jenny Davey, who for many years ran the local post office and store with husband Tony, and accompanied on the piano for nearly as long by Dorothy White. Jenny, despite relocation to Caldicot in Gwent, still travels to Blockley every Tuesday to conduct the practice.

The choir entertains at local celebrations and fund raising events, and particularly enjoy singing at weddings. They work hard to improve their technique and have hosted successful choral workshops with guest conductors, attended by other choirs from a wide area. Taking part in competitions at music festivals is also important and challenging for us. The choir is always looking for new members. No experience is required - just a love of singing. They meet every Tuesday at 7.30p.m. in Blockley. With their busy schedule they also need volunteer assistants to help the conductor and accompanist on a regular basis. If you feel you would like to join, please get in touch.
