St. George is the patron saint of England and St. Georges Day is April 23rd but Ebrington are celebrating the Day on the nearest Sunday with a traditional Sunday Family Lunch. Dress is an optional English Theme but it is certainly the day for having a red rose in your button hole whatever you wear.

St. George is the patron saint of England. His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England and part of the British Flag. St George's emblem was adopted by Richard The Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th Century. The king's soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.

One of the best known stories about Saint George is his fight with a dragon and he is known throughout the world as the dragon-slaying patron saint of England. St. George is also the Patron Saint of Scouting and on the Sunday nearest to April 23rd, scouts and guides throughout Britain parade and attend special St. George's Day services in their local churches.

Shakespeare was born on April 23rd 1564 and died on the same day in 1616 and he placed St. George within the national conscience in his play Henry V in which the English troops are rallied into battle with the cry "Cry God for Harry, England and St. George." With the revival of Scottish and Welsh nationalism there has been renewed interest within England in St. George, whose memory had been in abeyance for many years.
