The next Art and Antiques Sale from Simon Chorley

Thursday 23rd October  10.30 am. Simon Chorley Art & Antiques, Prinknash Abbey Park, Gloucestershire GL4 8EX
The next general art and antiques sale at Simon Chorley promises to offer something for every pocket and every interest with the usual collections of privately sourced material containing a few surprises.

Galileo’s DialogoThe sale opens with a very good book section with over 80 lots covering a multitude of titles.  Perhaps the star of the show is Galileo’s Dialogo - the first book to advance the scientific theories of the rotation of the earth.  Pope Urban VII brough Galileo to trial for heresy and he spent the rest of his life under house arrest.  The Dialogo remained on the Index Librorum Prohitorum until the early 19th century.  This copy is in a 19th century binding and bears the bookplate ‘Aberdare’, probably that of Henry Austin Bruce, 1st Baron Aberdare. Lot 58, estimate £3,000-5,000

Other interesting books include a first edition copy of the House at Pooh Corner, lot 56, estimate £40-60; Dr Johnson’s Works of Alexander Pope, lot 31, estimate £50-70; and A Personal View by A Snowdon, lot 59, estimate £80-120.  Or, from an interior designers perspective, there are plenty of elaborate book bindings with which to decorate bookcases.

Vintage clothing is very fashionable and the sale includes an array of designer names including Valentino blouses, various Jean Muir skirts, a Hardy Amies suit, Louis Feraud red chequered skirt and jacket, an Yves St Laurent skirt and for winter, an Aquascutum camel coat, estimates all around £40-60.

Of local interest are many albums of postcards, mainly of local scenes relating to Cheltenham, Gloucester and surrounding villages in the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean, estimates starting at £20 up to £300.

In time for Christmas is a large selection of wine and spirits including lot 514, 12 bottles of Chateau Leoville Barton, 1988, estimate £500-800; 6 bottles of Chateau Latour 1967, lot 533 at £300-500, and 6 bottles of Warres Port 1977 at £180-220, lot 559.

And finally, a fine pair of silver cast table candlesticks by James Gould, 1747, lot 231, estimate £1,500-2,000.

Public Viewing: Tuesday 21st October, 10am – 7pm and Wednesday 22nd October, 10am – 4pm
