Corinium Museum in line for top tourism award

The Corinium Museum in Cirencester will be awarded a top tourism prize next month after making the final of the South West Tourism Excellence Awards 2008/009.

The Cotswold District Council venue is guaranteed either a gold or silver award at the regional event, held at the Cadbury House Hotel and Spa in Somerset on November 24th, after making the final list of three winners in the ‘small attraction of the year’ category.

And if the Museum wins the gold award – a framed certificate and a commemorative prize – they will be entered into the national Enjoy England Awards for Excellence on April 23rd 2009.

The museum initially entered the ‘small attraction of the year’ category via an entry form containing 16 questions on which they were scored, before the top five in each category were shortlisted for a mystery visit by two experienced judges.

The judges assessed each institution on a range of criteria, including facilities, staff, training, access, marketing, sustainability and website provision, before making a final report to a judging panel.  Seventy-three organisations were then forwarded to the regional final in a range of categories, including ‘holiday park of the year’, ‘large hotel of the year’, ‘bed and breakfast of the year’ and ‘website of the year’.

Cotswold District Council’s Portfolio holder for Sport, Culture and Enterprise Cllr David Fowles said:  “I’m absolutely delighted that we are through to the finals.

“This is testament to the hard work of the curator and his excellent team in presenting the Corinium Museum as the leading venue in the Cotswolds for the portrayal of life from the Roman period onwards. “After the museum’s refurbishment in 2004, it’s great to have recognition for the museum and the team who operate there.”

The South West Tourism Excellence Awards are run in association with the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence, First Great Western and South West Water and aim to promote and reward the very best in the tourism industry.
