Sunday 21st September – Saturday 11th October 2008 Fosse Gallery Fine Art, Stow-on-the-Wold
This is the fourth Exhibition of paintings by Lucy Dickens at the Fosse Gallery. Lucy is the great, great granddaughter of the author and chronicler Charles Dickens and she began her career as a full-time artist in 1990 having previously worked as a fashion stylist for Conde Naste and then as a freelance illustrator for publications including The Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Daily Mail, Vogue, Harpers and Queen and Tatler.

Previously exhibitions at the Fosse Gallery in 1999, 2002 and 2004 were all very successful. Lucy began to paint while writing and illustrating a series of children’s books which were successfully published in London and New York.

“I am fascinated by figures, alone or in groups, how the light falls on them and the spaces around them. The people I paint are not doing anything extraordinary, they are simply “being” or interacting – lost in their own thoughts, going about their business or gossiping with friends. I am essentially painting a glimpse or snapshot of everyday happenings. These are real situations; vignettes of ordinary life and I am there with my sketchbook as an observer and reporter, capturing the moment which I will later interpret and develop”

Lucy is a keen traveller and the Aegean Summer Exhibition is based on the magic and beauty of the Greek Islands. She has been deeply drawn to the local life of course; priests, old ladies laden with shopping, dogs, skinny cats and long suffering mules trying to get out of the blistering sun. Then in contrast there are vast expanses of sea and sky, ever changing blues and blue greys, distant mysterious islands. In the foreground rise ancient olive groves, bleached grass and crumbling stone walls.
As Lucy explains “painting this exhibition has been so illuminating, a wonderful journey. I hope the work shows the joy I have felt in painting it”
