Governments around the world are setting targets for countries to reduce emissions and increase reliance on renewable energy. According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) the increase in reliance on wind as a renewable energy source could provide an extra 470 gigawatts of power between 2021 and 2025 so leading to 3.3 million jobs being created in the next five years.
A new service station on the M6, run by Moto, opened its doors on April 30 creating more than 100 jobs for the region. Located at Junction 1 for Rugby the services are the UK's flagship electric vehicle charging motorway services. It offers 24 rapid-charging points which allow for vehicles to gain 100 miles of charge in less than five minutes.
Furlough fraud issues have been an ongoing problem since the Job Retention Scheme was introduced by the government in March 2020. The Treasury Committee recently highlighted this problem as part of a review of the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The hasty roll out of the scheme and general miss management could prove to be very costly as the Treasury estimated billions have been misappropriated.
Construction has started on Manchester's Co-op Live arena a brand new 23,500-seater venue next to the Etihad Football Stadium. The £350m build is set to be the UK's biggest entertainment arena and it will "kickstart" a wave of economic activity and job creation in the North West region. The project developer OVG real Estate said that on average Co-op Live’s construction site will have 400 people working on it daily.
Starbucks is recruiting baristas and supervisors right across the North-East. There are 400 roles available nationally as the coffee reopens stores as lockdown lifts across the UK and a busy summer period is expected. Both barista and supervisor roles are available across Tyne and Wear and County Durham, including Eldon Square, Northumberland Street, the Metrocentre, Durham Framwelgate, Dalton Park, Sunderland and more.
The prime minister has announced new trade and investment deals with India worth £1bn. This includes over £533m of new investment from India into the UK, which will create about 6,000 jobs.
Some 185 jobs are to be created around Ireland in a “vote of confidence” for Ireland, despite the economic impact of the pandemic. Eight companies from Europe and the USA are creating these vacancies a report from the Industrial Development Agency (IDA) stated. The IDA is responsible for the attraction and retention of inward foreign investment. The location of these jobs are Cork, Clare, Galway, Dundalk and Dublin.
A Green Alliance think tank report says 16,000 'green creation' jobs could help employment in the areas of Britain worse hit by job losses due to the Covid 19 pandemic. The new jobs would be created by restoring nature and planting trees in areas where unemployment will increase when the government’s furlough schemes end. These include urban areas where people have little access to green space, coastal areas and also “red wall” areas in the north of England that were Labour strongholds.
