Cheltenham Chilli Company Heating Up
A new social enterprise launched by students is hotting up on campus.
Launched in February, the Cheltenham Chilli Company now has funding and recognition for its work, along with new branding for its products and marketing materials thanks to a competition run by the Gloucestershire Entrepreneur Society.

The company, which grows chillies in a greenhouse at the University of Gloucestershire’s Park campus to turn into chilli-based products, has won funding from the NUS Enterprise Project. The project is designed to get Students’ Unions from around the country to be more entrepreneurial, and received over 70 bids for funding.
After submitting a business plan and pitching to a panel of Dragon’s Den style investors, the Cheltenham Chilli Company was one of just six successful bids.

The new branding is the brainchild of second year Graphic Design student Rob Sewell who fought off stiff competition from other students at the University.
Tom Newman, Volunteering, Jobshop and Opportunities Manager at the University of Gloucestershire’s Students’ Union, said: “This will allow students to produce, market and sell 2000 jars of our signature chilli based products. Not only will this develop their employability and enterprise skills but all profits will be put back into the social enterprise to allow us to grow more chillies and diversify our product range, in turn allowing the next cohort of students to get involved.”
The project has also been recognised by the NUS Green Impact team by being awarded an Excellence Award for Sustainability at their latest annual awards ceremony.
Tom added: “In order to build on these successes and to help achieve our core aims of encouraging more people to grow their own food, we are offering one free chilli plant to each University department. The chillis are growing well and we are hoping to provide Freshers with plants as well as products for the new academic year.”
