A bid to lighten the blow of potential post office closures in the Cotswolds has been put forward by Cotswold District Council this week.
During November, Post Office Ltd will be considering which, if any, of the 38 Post Offices in the Cotswold District will be earmarked for closure. The company announced earlier this year that it plans to close 2,500 Post Offices across the country by October 2008.
Cotswold District Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee hopes that key points about the Cotswolds, which it is submitting to Post Office Ltd, will highlight the importance of saving the District’s post offices from closure.
Evidence from the committee includes overall data about the Cotswolds, as well as statistics highlighting rural access issues and the fact that many local post offices act as a focal point for rural communities.
Also included in CDC’s submissions is a survey showing the range of local services provided by post offices in the District and the impact their closures may have on rural residents.
Cllr David Penman, Chairman of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, said: “We have looked at the whole area and the demographics.
“We are concerned that Post Office Ltd may not be taking into account the increasingly ageing population living in our rural areas who are becoming more reliant on their Post Offices, thus any closures could remove this part of our communities independence and ability to survive everyday life”
Any Post Offices identified for closure in the Cotswolds will be announced in February 2008, when a six-week period of public consultation begins.
