In Perfect Harmony for Steam Railway’s Emergency Appeal

Reading Male Voice Choir is to perform a benefit concert at Cheltenham Town Hall on Saturday 14th April. Proceeds will go to help repair the railway embankment collapse on the GWR Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.

The top-quality Reading Male Voice Choir (RMVC) are putting on a stunning performance, with special guests the Miscellany Ladies’ Choir.

The RMVC is widely acclaimed as one of the country’s premier male voice

choirs. It won the BBC’s ‘Let the People Sing’ and have performed at both
Sadler’s Wells and the Royal Albert Hall.

Under the direction of composer and choir founder Gwyn Arch MBE, the Choir

is presenting a miscellany of music which choir secretary, James Grufferty,
describes as ‘Music of the World’ including African Trilogy (South Africa),
Malaika (Tanzania), Carrickfergus (Ireland); and Gospel and Spiritual (USA).

“But we’re not forgetting the music of the masters,” he adds. “So you might

expect to hear Bach, Mozart, Verdi and the modern classic The Armed Man
(Benedictus and Sanctus) by Karl Jenkins.

“We have some thoughts about special railway-related songs, too!”

As for the Miscellany Ladies’ Choir, since 1982 this highly accomplished

Clevedon, North Somerset-based choir have been performing in venues from
Taunton to France and in a startling variety of venues from village halls to
National Trust properties and cathedrals. They put on around 20
performances per year.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway’s Maxine Hawkins, who is organising the event, is very enthusiastic about the event. “We’re in for some

stunning choral work that will captivate and entrance.

“It’s in aid of the railway’s emergency appeal which is still over £100,000

short of target to complete the £670,000 project to rebuild the collapsed
embankment just north of Winchcombe, which has divided our railway.

“Repair work is now pressing ahead with a target for completion by September – but if the money runs out, that will be delayed. This concert is a great way to have a cracking evening of top-quality, international choral music, and raise money for the railway at the same time!”

She adds, “We’re deeply grateful to both Choirs for making themselves
available and contributing to the railway’s appeal.”

Tickets cost £14 (£13.50 for GWSR members) and can be bought from the Cheltenham Town Hall Booking Office
