Tyne and Wear is a metropolitan county in the North East region of England. It consists of South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and Sunderland. Once known as a shipbuilding town, Sunderland now has some top employers for international automotive and financial centres. Since the city’s regeneration in the 1980s, Sunderland’s economy has been ever-growing, with Nissan opening a motor manufacturing branch in 1986. The factory is one of the largest employers, giving maintenance technicians, finance controllers, and engineers opportunities.

Originally, Newcastle was a coal mining town, but coal mining went into decline during the second half of the twentieth century. Nowadays, Newcastle has many prominent industries, with the main one being health. This makes it the perfect place for nurses, researchers, professors and doctors. The football team Newcastle United generates a huge amount of money for the county with only 288 employees.

The highest placing company in Newcastle is the public transport juggernaut ‘The Go-Ahead Group’, bringing in over £3 million per year. Gateshead is home to the MetroCentre and the Team Valley Trading Estate both of which are large and prosperous developments.
