New owners ready to style the Shaven Crown at Shipton-under-Wychwood

One of Oxfordshire’s most well known pubs has changed hands after a deal brokered by sector specialists from Colliers International.

Said to be one of the ten oldest inns in the country, the Shaven Crown at Shipton-under-Wychwood has been sold to Phil and Evelyn Roberts.

The sale is the latest in a string of successes Colliers International hotels director Peter Brunt has achieved across the region including a brace of hotels just down the road in Burford.

Steeped in history, the landmark Shaven Crown between Burford and Chipping Norton was founded in the 14th century by the monks of Bruern Abbey and later used as a royal hunting lodge by Queen Elizabeth I.

Sir Oswald and Lady Mosley were resident at this hotel under police supervision for a time during 1943.

Peter Brunt said: “It has maintained its genuine olde worlde charm for more than 700 years and there is considerable scope for higher trade following some cosmetic refurbishment here and there.”

The nine-bedroom Shaven Crown is believed to date back to 1384 and retains masses of evidence of its medieval origins not least the Great Hall, now the residents’ lounge.

Shipton-under-Wychwood lies on the A361 between Burford and Chipping Norton, and it makes the ideal base from which to explore Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water and the Cotswolds.

Peter Brunt said: “This is a can’t-go-wrong location as it draws visitors all year round.”
