Once one of Arts and Crafts guru William Morris’ favourite watering holes The Plough Inn in Kelmscott near Lechlade is on the market with Colliers International.
The 17th century pub on the edge of the Cotswolds offers eight letting bedrooms as well as a cottage for owners or managers.

Situated in the charming village of Kelmscott near Lechlade, the Plough ticks all the boxes for the archetypal Cotswolds pub complete with local stone exterior and slate roof, flagged floors, exposed walls and welcoming open fireplace beneath plenty of beams.

On the market with Colliers International at £650,000 freehold, the pub is just around the corner from Kelmscott Manor – former home of renowned textile and furnishings designer William Morris.

Peter Brunt, hotels director at Colliers International, said there were plenty of other attractions nearby.

“Walk into the Plough and you really do step back through time. It’s a residential inn of great quality with eight very smart letting bedrooms which widen its appeal.”

“The cosy bar and generously sized restaurant have huge amounts of character, pulling in regulars from around the area as well as visitors to the Manor.

” Most of the village buildings date from the 1600s and the sense of history is palpable.”

William Morris, doyen of the Arts and Crafts Movement, first rented nearby Kelmscott Manor in 1871 as a summer house and later described the village as “heaven on earth”.

Close to Lechlade to the west and Faringdon to the south east, the Plough is well spotted on the main A420 from Oxford to Swindon and lies just north of the River Thames – just a five minute stroll away.

Peter went on: “Our client bought The Plough in 2002 as an adjunct to a successful non-hospitality business that he owns. He has now decided that he could put the capital he has invested in the property into better use in his main venture and as a result The Plough is available to purchase.

“The Plough is a most attractive Grade II listed building and would suit either owner occupation or could be continued to be run under management.”

In addition to the eight letting bedrooms the Plough includes an owner’s cottage with a kitchen on the ground floor along with a sitting room, double bedroom and
shower room on the first floor.

There is also a double bedroom with en suite that could in future be available
for staff or as an extension of the owners’ accommodation.
