Shipston Proms celebrate Benjamin Britten

Youngsters from schools in Shipston-on-Stour took part in a celebratory performance of Benjamin Britten’s community opera Noye’s Fludde – Noah’s Flood – as a highlight of the 15th annual Shipston Proms.

The production, by the Orchestra of the Swan, was staged in three performances at Townsend Hall last weekend.They marked the centenary of the composer’s birth.

Another highlight was a concert by Coventry Philharmonic Choir at St. Edmund’s Church. They sang works by Bach, Verdi, Handel, Haydn, Michael Tippett and Howard Goo

“The performances were well attended”, said Tim Porter, Shipston Proms chairman.

“Other events are going well, and gives us something to build on in the future”.

The Last Night of the Proms is this Saturday evening in the centre of Shipston. Headline act will be the David Bowie tribute band ‘Ultimate Bowie’ plus the ukulele supergroup, Rinky Dinks.

Also playing will be the Shipston High School band Battered Soul, and Harriet Kelley of Stratford grammar school, winners of the Proms Fame Contest.
