Waitrose today announced its support for the second annual Sodbury Sportive and pledged to keep the riders well fed by sponsoring the meal given to participating cyclists at the end of the event.
The Saddleback Sodbury Sportive (1) is a must do sportive for all levels of cyclists. The 2012 Sportive attracted 376 riders and raised £6404 for various Rotary Charities.
Sodbury Sportive Organiser and Rotarian (2) Bill Bennett commented, ‘this year we are hoping for over 750 riders and we are well on the way to achieving this. It will be a fantastic event for all riders and we are delighted that we will be in a position to raise even more money for Charity now that Waitrose have agreed to help us’.

The Sportive offers a choice of three distances and takes in some wonderful countryside, quiet lanes and beautiful views. Well signed and marshalled, refreshing food stations, mechanical support at the start and along the way as well as a broom wagon to collect struggling riders ensure that the event is enjoyed by all.

Rich Clare, Branch Manager at the new Waitrose in Chipping Sodbury:

“I’m delighted to support such a professionally run local sporting event. Cyclists taking part are going to work up an appetite and I hope will appreciate the pasties, quiche and salad to re-fuel them at the finishing line.

I’m very keen that Waitrose Chipping Sodbury plays a positive role in the local community and am pleased to see this start to happen before we even open in Autumn and as we just begin to recruit for Partners to work at the shop.”

The Sportive takes place on Sunday 18 August starting at Chipping Sodbury RFC. Entry forms are available at

2012 entrant and ex Olympian Phil Bayton commented, ‘from the moment I arrived at the HQ I was impressed by the friendliness of everyone, every detail was covered and from a personal point of view it was one of the most enjoyable days I have spent on the bike’.
