2014 commemorates the fifteenth anniversary of Stonehouse-firm Eurolink Connect. As part of its anniversary initiatives Eurolink have joined forces with the voluntary charity organisation Operation Shoebox to supply goods and home comforts to 15 members of a British troop currently serving in Afghanistan.
Director Claire Maddox said “when we heard about Operation Shoebox we thought it was a wonderful charity to get involved with. Several of our staff has worked either in or with the forces, so it seemed a natural fit. We understand that our boys and girls on the front line miss their home comforts, so for a bit of fun and warmth the company are sending out 15 onesie’s and a goodie bag to each of the soldiers containing some treats, sweets and a £10 phone card. As a company that works in telecommunications, what better gift could we give, than putting them in contact with their loved ones this Valentine’s Day?”
On behalf of Operation Shoebox, Regional Voluntary Coordinator Rebecca Leppard said “we are incredibly grateful to Eurolink Connect for this generous donation. Soldiers serving overseas can often feel very cut off from home. Receiving such a kind and generous gift will really boost morale, and I am sure the onesie’s will go down a storm! I can’t wait to see the picture from Camp Bastian”.
Recent messages received from 5 Rifles, based in Afghanistan: “I just wanted to send you a note to say thanks for the packages you’ve sent. It’s so nice to know that people back home are thinking of us. And it’s great to get toiletries and snacks. You wouldn’t believe how excited men can get over some shower gel and a flap jack!”
About Operation Shoebox:
Operation Shoebox came about in 2005 when founder Ian Whiteway was asked to collect a few parcels for British Troops serving in Afghanistan through RAF Lyneham. The parcels included things like sweets, jam, marmite, pot noodles, soup sachets, shower gel and a card with a personal message on it. It wasn’t about agreeing or disagreeing with war he simply just wanted to send the brave soldiers (often a stranger), a parcel and message of support. That ethos applies today. Since 2005 Operation Shoebox has over 40 voluntary Regional Co-ordinators across England, Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland. These Co-ordinators are security checked and are responsible for sending out parcels to assigned troops in Afghanistan. In the past 6 years, well over 55,000 shoeboxes have been sent.
Operation Shoebox provides support to our serving troops throughout their tour and not just at Christmas and will be sending out regular dispatches up until the end of June. With the scheduled withdrawal of troops this year, the charity are working together with the MOD to ensure that they can provide the correct support for serving UK troops and their families in the future.
