Diesel trains and buses: GWR’s second Bus Rally and Summer Diesel Gala.
There will be no shortage of buses to choose from on Sunday 12th July at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway’s Toddington station, as the railway’s second Bus Rally gets under way with a startling variety of single and double-deckers dating from the 1940s.

In fact, the GWR is putting on a real feast for everyone keen on diesels – on rail and road.

Toddington Bus RallyToddington Bus RallyThis spectacular bus show is on the last day of the ‘Honeybourne Line’s’ summer Diesel Gala which runs from Friday 10th July.  Over the three days, no fewer than fourteen diesel locomotives will be used on the 10-mile Cotswold railway, which runs through stunning countryside between Toddington and Cheltenham Racecourse.

Friday sees the line’s first ‘Shunterfest’ with the types of goods shunting locomotives that are usually behind the scenes in yards and sidings, taking a starring role handling passenger trains.  And on all three days there will be a range of classic diesel locomotives working in a variety of combinations.

Says organiser Jim Clarke: “Buses and diesel trains seem to be a winning combination.  Last year nearly 1,000 visitors came to enjoy the spectacle of so many colourful vehicles and get a chance to ride on a classic bus and diesel-hauled train.

“You could hear people saying things like: ‘I used to go to school on one of those’, or: ‘The conductor used to help me on the bus with the pushchair when I went shopping’.”

Jim adds: “The diesel-hauled trains will bring lots of nostalgia, too.  They are the types of locomotive that were once an everyday sight in the 1960s and 1970s after the end of steam, but are now rarely seen on the main line.

Winchcombe Diesels“Diesels are growing in popularity and the GWR has one of the finest heritage diesel fleets in the country.  And with many visiting locomotives too, we’re in for a really spectacular show.”

As part of the bus rally, there will be FREE classic bus services connecting the GWR with Cheltenham Spa and Evesham Network Rail stations, as well as rides on different buses from Toddington station.

·Cheltenham Spa Network Rail station (departing 09.30 and 10.00) to Cheltenham Racecourse station, returning late afternoon (check times on the day);

·Evesham Network Rail station to Toddington, departing Toddington at 09.30 to meet services from Worcester (arrves Evesham 09.32) and London and Oxford (arrives Evesham 10.17).  The service will depart Toddington for Evesham at 16.00
